Sixth sense

One day in middle school, walking out of the lunchroom down a long, sunny hallway, I saw my father emerge from the band room where he taught instrumental music. He spotted me and pivoted, approaching with another music teacher alongside and holding a thick, green glass Coke bottle in his hand. It was half full.

Mercury Opera and Monday's mystery piece

Mercury Opera Rochester has announced its 2010-2011 season.  In the fall, the company will offer its first Gilbert & Sullivan production, The Pirates of Penzance, at the new auditorium at Penfield High School.

Friday's Mystery piece

Mozart, sort ofMozart, sort of  Congratulations to Bob and Kristi who both guessed today's mystery piece, the Overture to The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Mozart.  We heard the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Leopold Hager. (Novalis 150041.)  Monday's mystery involves The Bad News Bears.

So? Where's the hype this time?!?

Mozart turned 250, and you couldn't turn around without banging your shins on another recording of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik.  Mendelssohn turns 200 and...not so much.
