From the President

The new school year is almost upon us

For most school districts in the Rochester area, classes start September 2nd. At the station that means a whole new season of Homework Hotline, our state-wide television series that offers homework help to students in grades 4-12 right over the air. If you're not familiar with the program, here's how it works – teachers from the Rochester Teachers Association take calls at Dial-A-Teacher and send them to WXXI studios, where host teachers, who are experts in subjects across the curriculum, are standing by ready to help kids work through their homework assignments live on television. Now in its 25th season, Homework Hotline kicks off Monday, September 14 at 5:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV. Funded in part by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) it airs Monday through Thursday throughout the school year.

Homework Hotline is just one of dozens of educational children’s programs we offer. In fact, WXXI-TV broadcasts more than 15 hours of non-violent, non-commercial children’s programming to offer all kids the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds. Our Ready-to-Learn programs like Peg + Cat, Curious George, and Dinosaur Train offer content that helps narrow the achievement gap by preparing our youngest viewers for success in school. These programs help to make sure these youngsters are ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.

On the topic of children’s programming, you may have heard or read that Sesame Workshop, the company that produces Sesame Street, has a new production deal that extends the program to HBO.  I want to assure you that Sesame Street will continue to be available on WXXI, free and accessible whether you watch on cable, satellite or over-the-air. The HBO agreement makes funding available for new episodes of the program and they will also be available on WXXI. In this rapidly changing media world, we constantly look for new ways and new partners to help bring quality programs to the public.
