ESCOLA DE SAMBA centers on the creation of the Sao Paulo Carnival, an all-consuming party which takes place annually throughout Brazil.
The program unfolds on the streets of Sao Paulo, where Brazilian culture, with its Portuguese and African roots, shapes the story, songs, dances and costumes. Over the course of 10 months, the program followed one group as they, and 4,000 others, design and produce costumes, and construct magnificent three-story-high floats. ESCOLA DE SAMBA, airing Monday, September 26 at 7 p.m. on WXXI World (cable 524/DT21.2), captures the loyal members of Camisa Verde e Branco (Green and White Shirts) as they select their theme and song (samba), and concludes with footage from the frenzied spectacle of Carnival, the judging process and the results of the competition.
