I was preparing a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concert for broadcast the other day, and it struck me that the two works on the program had wildly differing sound wave patterns, even though they were recorded at the same levels. This was interesting!
Here's a quiz. See if you can tell which of these sound files is . . .
1. Fanny Mendelssohn's short cantata "Job"
2. Gustav Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony (the opening movement)
3. A chorus of spring peepers singing in a pond the other night near my house
Answers are below.
In the meantime, mark your calendar for the 2011-2012 season of the RPO, coming in Monday nights to WXXI-FM starting in April.
