Biz Kid$, Season 2
As headlines of financial problems continue to dominate the news, the financial literacy of our youth – our future economic leaders – is even more crucial. To address this need for financial education, public television brings back a second season of Biz Kid$, an entertaining, fast-paced series that teaches kids how to use credit wisely and how to be their own financial managers. Produced in High Definition (HD) by the creators of the Emmy Award-winning series Bill Nye the Science Guy, Biz Kid$ illustrates the importance of saving, budgeting, investing, and giving back to the community. Biz Kid$ airs Sundays at 10:30 a.m. beginning January 4 and repeats Friday's at 5:30 p.m., on WXXI-TV 21 (cable 11) and WXXI-HD (cable 1011 and DT 21.1).
Season 2 includes episodes on using credit wisely, understanding financial risks, economic cycles, money math, business planning, online businesses, learning from failure, and more. The half-hour weekly series features profiles of creative young entrepreneurs and spoofs of movies such as The Matrix, Frankenstein, and The Wizard of Oz. From the archetypal lawn mowing business to the ingenious ElementO chemistry board game, young business owners share their success stories and inspire viewers of all ages.
“With the economic downturn, it is more important than ever before to educate our young people about personal finance and give them life skills,” said Biz Kid$ Executive Producer Jamie Hammond. “At a time when only 10% of youth in America are graduating high school with any kind of instruction in personal finance, Biz Kid$ helps kids understand the importance of saving and starting good financial habits early on.”
Ongoing surveys from the Jump Start Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy show dwindling comprehension of financial topics. From 2006 to 2008, high school seniors’ average financial literacy test scores fell from 52.4 percent to 48.3 percent.
To inspire viewers, Biz Kid$ searches nationally for stories of real kids running real businesses, from big companies with product lines to small businesses like dog-walking. A few featured this season include:
- Lava Bags, custom-designed handbags that utilize scrap fabrics and materials
- Just Yell Fire, self-defense DVD and products
- ElementeO, a fun board game that teaches chemistry
- Serveitup.org, a tennis coaching business
- Beams to Dreams, sailing adventure trips for kids with cancer
- Shield of Green, an online business to help stop junk mail
- Zephyr Productions, sponsor of hip-hop events
- You’re on Deck, custom-designed decks of cards
Each episode focuses on a specific learning objective, which was developed using national financial literacy standards. Companion materials and activities for every show are available to teachers and parents at no cost on the show’s web site, www.bizkids.com. The site also features clips from the series and invites kids to apply to appear on the show. Web site visitors can also sign up for the show’s monthly newsletter, The Vault, which offers ideas on how kids can start their own businesses, plus hints on earning money and making their money grow.
Biz Kid$ launched in January 2008, and has aired on more than 320 public television stations across the country. The series is produced in association with WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, New York and is distributed by American Public Television. Major funding for Biz Kid$ is provided by a coalition of America’s Credit Unions.
