The Island President
This is the story of Republic of Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, who helped rescue his country from decades of despotism.
Local audiences will get a “peek behind the curtain” of the upcoming Greentopia | FILM festival, debuting in September, at the area premiere of The Island President, set for 7pm Thursday, July 19 at The Little Theatre, 240 East Avenue. This one-night-only event will capture the programming flavor, the community conversation, and the festive environment of western New York’s newest and most original film festival.
Directed by Jon Shenk and winner of the 2011 People’s Choice Documentary Award at last year’s Toronto Inter- national Film Festival, The Island President is the story of Republic of Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, who helped rescue his country from decades of despotism and now faces an ever greater challenge: saving his land and people from ecologic catastrophe. As one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1,200 islands of the Maldives, rendering them uninhabitable.
The Island President captures Nasheed’s first year in office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009, where the film provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at top-level global assemblies. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies—leveraging the Maldives’ under- dog position as a tiny country, harnessing the power of media, and overcoming gridlock through an appeal to unity with other developing nations.
“The Island President shows how politics, science, and current events all have genuinely life-and-death conse- quences for people around the world,” says Linda Moroney, Director of Greentopia | FILM, which is co-pre- senting the evening’s entertainment with The Little Theatre. “It’s an exciting story, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with Rochester audiences – on its own, and as a kick-off to our bigger Greentopia | FILM festival in September.”
After the screening, director Jon Shenk will take questions from the audience in a live conversation via Skype. The festivities will continue before and after the film, with pre-program entertainment by Serge Tsvasman and Friends and a post-show appearance by the Snow Daze food truck, offering shaved-ice treats to patrons on what is sure to be a hot summer night.
Tickets for this one-time screening of The Island President are $10 online prior to the screening or $12 at the door and may be purchased at http://greentopiafestival.com/film/#2.
