What happens when the producers of public television’s only regularly scheduled health series hit the road to ask viewers across the country what they want from the show? A more engaging, topic-targeted, newly formatted Second Opinion: Taking Charge of Your Healthcareseries happens! Season ten launches this October with 10 new episodes that tackle everything from concussion to whooping cough, melanoma to food allergies to hypertension.
Produced in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center and West 175 Productions, the weekly series kicks off Thursday, October 10 at 8:30 p.m. on WXXI-TV, and on more than 250 PBS stations across the country.
Host Dr. Peter Salgo, a full-time medical practitioner, introduces patients and their intriguing real-life medical cases to a panel of specialists, who share the most up-to-date information and treatment options. While the popular patient story remains the backbone of the show, new segments have been added this season. “Myth or Medicine” is a new field segment where viewers can send in a health claim that they have heard, and Second Opinion’s doctors and producers get to work to find out if it is a medical myth or good medicine. “Second Opinion Five" is a short segment that allows a health care provider to speak directly to the audience, giving viewers the top five things they need to know about a topic (i.e.: Five ways to prevent skin cancer, five signs that you need to go to the ER after a head injury).
A comprehensive social media campaign planned around the new season allows for interaction between viewers, the show, and the series’ team of doctors. This social media launch kicked off last July when the series hosted three live Twitter events where Twitter followers were able to watch the live production of three episodes (Concussion, Diabetes, and Food Allergies), send in questions to the panelists on the show, and interact with medical advisors who were watching the taping. Second Opinion is active on Twitter and Facebook, where informative and engaging health content is posted daily. In addition to the weekly broadcast, Second Opinion engages and educates viewers through a comprehensive web site at www.SecondOpinion-tv.org. The site, which has also been revamped for Season 10 and set to launch with the series in October, includes full episodes of recent seasons, medical information in the form of searchable video, resources and transcripts. The new site also offers blogs and links to weekly Twitter events to provide a place for viewers to go to access trusted health information.
Second Opinion’s executive producers are Elissa Orlando and Elizabeth Brock. Fiona Willis is the series producer. Second Opinion is endorsed by both the American Hospital Association and the Association of Academic Health Centers. The series’ principal medical advisor is Dr. Roger Oskvig, an acknowledged leader in Gerontology and associate professor of medicine at University of Rochester Medical Center, and the inaugural recipient of the 2011 WXXI President’s Award.
The series has earned seven Communicator Awards, eight Bronze Telly Awards, a Silver Telly Award, a Gold Award from the World Wide Web Health Awards for Patient Education Information, the National Media Award for Broadcast from The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, a National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) Award of Excellence in Public Broadcasting, and a Gold Aurora Award. The series is distributed by American Public Television.
