Fred Martinez was Nadleehi- someone who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits- a special gift according to his traditional Navajo culture. His determination to express his truest identity costs him his life at age sixteen. He was one of the youngest hate-crimes in modern history when he was murdered in Cortez, Colorado.
Two Spirits intertwine between a tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son, and of a time when it was honored if a Native American person had integrated genders. Between tradition and controversy, sex and spirit, and freedom and fear, lives the truth of the bravest choice you can make and that is to be yourself.
