Women's History Month..... oh yeah??
Women's History Month (representing more than half the population) is not listed in the pumpkin-colored highlight box, on the main page of topic listings. In addition, once you find Women's History Month listings, there are a mere three current offerings. All three are simply taken from the listings already available during Black History Month. While I'm of course delighted to see them listed there so that women are fully represented in that topic area, one might think that our fabulous and respected WXXI-TV might be able to produce or purchase several additional offerings just for the month of March, honoring women. The fact that they apparently have not done so is particularly regrettable given that 2011 is the 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day (March 8th), a holiday fully recognized in many countries across the world but hardly known or noticed across the U.S. This year is also the 100th anniversary of the terribly tragic Shirtwaist Factory Fire in N.Y.C., in which many young women died, leaving a legacy that would change the face of labor laws across America.
I would like to see WXXI-TV and Radio recognize women's history and achievements with far more time and space on both tv and the airwaves.
