Six of Rochester's unsung heroes were honored for their dedication to "being more."

WXXI recognized the unsung heroes and heroic efforts of six individuals by presenting them with PBS Be More Awards at a special reception at WXXI on Thursday, October 29. The awards spotlighted those in the community who share WXXI’s dedication to helping people in the Greater Rochester Area excel.

WXXI’s Be More Award winners are:
• Sister Christine Wagner, Executive Director of the St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center, who received the Be More Engaged Award for her work at the Center, providing primary health care to low-income families.

• Thomas Warfield, founder of Peace Art International, was given the Be More Creative Award for his work in utilizing the arts and creativity to build community and foster greater human understanding and world peace.

• Sandy Hasenhauer, Elizabeth Ewell and Kathy LaBue of Mary’s House took home the Be More Enriched Award for their work in helping integrate refugees from Burma, Somalia, Sudan, and Nepal into the Rochester area.

• Hon. John C. Ninfo II received the Be More Informed Award for his work in fighting financial illiteracy through his own project, The Greater Rochester Area Financial Literacy Initiative (GRAFLI).

To further honor this year’s winners, WXXI is producing a thirty second spot profiling the winners, their organizations, and their contributions to the Rochester community. The spots will run on WXXI-TV early next year. The 2009 Be More Awards are part of a nationally recognized program for PBS member stations.
